Why Rest Is a Skill, Not a Reward

Most of us are better at working than we are at resting. We rest only when we collapse, and then we feel guilty about it. Rest becomes a transaction: I worked hard, so I deserve this.

But rest is not a reward. It is a skill. And it needs to be practiced.

Schedule rest first

Put rest on your calendar before the work expands to fill it. A walk, a nap, an evening with no plans. Treat it as an appointment with yourself.

Notice the guilt

Guilt often shows up when we rest. It is not a signal that rest is wrong. It is a signal that rest is unfamiliar. Let it be there without obeying it.

Start small

Five minutes of doing nothing. Ten minutes without a screen. A slow cup of tea. Small rests, repeated, build a calmer life.

The goal is not to earn more rest. The goal is to become someone who knows how to rest.
